Cheap Auto Insurance for Teenagers

Written by admin on April 1st, 2010

Generally the words cheap auto insurance and teenagers do not go hand in hand, but in this article I am going to explain to you what you can do to get the cheapest available insurance for your teenager.

Teenagers love the sense of having freedom. Turning 16 and being able to get your license opens up a whole new world for them. Often times when a teenager gets behind the wheel of a car, they feel that they are invincible and causes them to take risks that an experienced driver won’t. Auto Insurance companies realize that and that’s why insuring a teenager is often times a lot more expensive then insuring a middle age adult with a good driving record.

Many auto insurance companies consider people under the age of 25 in a higher risk category for vehicle accidents. Getting in an accident as a teenager could skyrocket your premiums up by 50% to even 100%. Young people in the ages of 15-20 die from car crashes more then anything else. This makes a teenager a serious threat to someone on the road which is why teen auto insurance premiums are high, but don’t be too discouraged! I will show you what you can do to lower those premiums!

As a teenager this is how you can get a cheap auto insurance quote.

  1. Keep a good driving record. Having multiple speeding tickets and accidents will not look good at all. Many accidents are from teenagers speeding and when you get speeding tickets, the insurance company is going to consider you as a risky driver and raise your rates. DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) or DUI (Driving Under the Influence) will make your rates skyrocket as well. Its very possible, your premiums could double and you might even lose your license, so keeping a clean driving record is very important if you want to keep those premiums down.
  2. Drive a Safe Car. Having a newer car with advanced airbags will help lower your premiums as much as 50%! Insurance companies know that if you were to get in an accident, it will be a lot less likely for you to get injured then in an old car with no airbags. Having a high horsepower sports car or a SUV will increase your premiums and insurance companies see those cars being more risky for teens to drive.
  3. Getting Good Grades. Doing well in school and having a 3.0 or higher GPA will help lower your insurance rates up to 10%. Insurance companies reward teens with good academic performance. This is a good motivation for teenagers to get good grades because it helps save money
  4. Take a Defensive Driving Course. Having taken a defensive driving course shows insurance companies that you are trying to be a safe driver to avoid accidents. This will also help in getting a discount. Make sure you contact your insurance company and ask them for a list of approved defensive driving courses you can take in your area.
  5. Get involved in a Community. Last but not least, the teenager can involve themselves in a community such as Eagle Scouts or Girl Scouts. Certain insurance companies will give an additional discount for this because they see the teenager as less risky since they are spending time bettering their community.
