Getting Auto Insurance After a DUI Conviction

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

Obtaining auto insurance after a DUI (Driving Under the Influence) conviction can be a big challenge. Being convicted of a DUI is not something you want. It’s humiliating and expensive, from all the attorney fees to fines to license suspension. After all that’s said and done, getting auto insurance will be another big problem.

If you are convicted of a DUI, more then likely your insurance company is going to find out and deal with it in one of two ways. First your rates will go up substantially if they decide that they still want to insure you. The other way is they cancel your insurance policy because you are deemed as a high-risk driver. If your auto insurance company does decide to keep you, most states require the insurance company to provide the state motor vehicle agency (DMV, MVD) with an SR-22 Proof of Insurance Certificate, which removes your license suspension by providing the state with proof that you are insured.

While this sounds like a good alternative, the catch is that not all insurance companies offer SR-22 policies. So your policy may be non-renewed or cancelled simply because the company can no longer provide insurance for you. In some states, insurers can’t cut you off in the middle of the policy term, so be sure to check on the laws where you live.

Another less-likely scenario is that your insurance company doesn’t find out about your DUI because, for whatever reason. Occasionally, your insurer will not raise your rates or cancel you if you’ve been a long time insured with no other blemishes on your record. But this is also pretty unlikely.

If your policy is cancelled or non-renewed, you will still be able to find insurance. It will not likely be one of the preferred carriers, like AAA, Allstate or Geico, but some other well-known companies (such as State Farm and Progressive Insurance) as well as other smaller companies will cover you and file the SR-22 for you so your license may be reinstated. Your rates will most certainly be higher, particularly because a DUI violation remains on your driving record for anywhere from five years to the rest of your life, depending on the state you’re in. Auto Insurance for Classic, Exotic and Specialty Cars

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

A lot of people would normally think that buying car insurance for a classic, exotic or specialty car is going to cost a lot of money. To be honest, I thought the same way before as well, until I did some research and talked to a bunch of people who own these types of cars. You would be surprised to hear that in some cases its actually cheaper then insuring a normal car!

Here’s how and why…. If you were to call up your normal insurance company and try to insurance your high dollar car, no doubt your rates would probably sky rocket, but because this is a special car, it needs “special” insurance. There are actually many companies out there that specifically cater to these high-end cars. These companies know that you are not going to be driving the car everyday and chances are you are going to be using the car as a weekend car and by using the car as a weekend car you are driving it a lot less then you would in a normal car. Less driving equals lesser chance in getting in an accident. A lot of the times owners of these special cars will pay just as much as they would for their Mercedes or BMW as their Ferrari or Lamborghini.

How To Get Cheap Auto Insurance Being a High Risk Driver?

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

So you have a bad driving record? Don’t worry, there are still ways you can get cheap auto insurance. Before we help you can get low rates, consider being more cautious and obeying the speed limits, traffic signs and signals. Also remember to pay your bills on time as well, because your credit score also determines how much your auto insurance premiums will go up.

The first thing you can do being a high risk driving is consider reducing the amount of insurance you carry by driving a less expensive car. Having a less expensive car, you can reduce certain types of coverage such as comprehensive (which covers your vehicle, and sometimes other vehicles you may be driving for losses resulting from incidents other than collision, such as fire and flood) and collision (which covers damage to your car when your car hits, or is hit by, another vehicle or other object and pays to fix your vehicle). You can also decrease the amount of liability insurance as long as you carry the state minimum. However you should beware about decreasing the amount of liability insurance you carry if you own a lot of assets such as a home or business. Getting involved in a serious accident can put your assets in jeopardy if the damages exceed the liability coverage.

Some other information you should know is that insurance companies will not hold a grudge against your driving record. If you show them that you are a good driver for 3 years (not getting any more violations) your insurance rates will drop significantly. It’s also important to be upfront with your insurance company and not lie about your driving record and credit history. Most insurance companies have 60 days to investigate your background. If they find out you lied, they’ll most likely cancel your policy and you might even have a harder time finding insurance in the future.

And lastly, don’t forget to shop around! High-risk drivers, more then anyone should spend sometime shopping around for the cheapest auto insurance quote. Keep in mind there are many auto insurance companies out there who insure high-risk drivers, but might not give you the best price. So remember to shop around for the cheapest auto insurance quote!

How To Get A Low Auto Insurance Quote?

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

It’s always an exciting experiencing purchasing a new car. Now you have to find the best way to protect it. This means getting auto insurance with the best coverage for the lowest price. Without auto insurance, you are basically a ticking bomb waiting to explode. So many bad things can happen with just one accident. Having insurance will provide you with a piece of mind and most importantly protection.

Getting a cheap auto insurance quote isn’t hard. Here are some factors to determine if you can get a cheap auto insurance quote.

First, auto insurance companies are going to run your driving record. If you have multiple violations such as speeding tickets and accidents, your rates will be more expensive. A lot of people say “well it’s just speeding tickets, I never been in a accident before.” Studies have shown that people who speed are much more likely to get in an accident then someone who obeys the speed limit. Insurance companies will take note of that and increase your rates because you are more prone to getting in an accident. To get a low rate you’ll need to have little to no violations on your record.

Second factor will be your age. If you are a teenager and just received your license, your insurance rates are going to be higher then a more experienced drive, whose been driving longer. Studies have shown that younger people with little driving experience are also more prone to getting in an accident. Generally, women will also pay less then men.

Third, the insurance company will check your credit history when you are getting your rate. (Don’t worry if you are getting a quote online, they will not ask for that) Although your credit doesn’t affect your driving in anyway, auto insurance companies want to make sure that you are able to pay your monthly statements. If you have poor credit, your rates might be a bit higher or you might even get declined with some companies. (Don’t worry if you get declined, there are plenty of companies to choose from, and there will always be one that will insure you)

And for those who don’t have such great driving records, or credit history, a great way you can save money is by taking a defensive driving class. Most insurance companies will give a discount once you’ve completed the course. It shows insurance companies that you want to be a safe driver to prevent accidents. Another thing you can do is, make sure you purchase a car with good safety ratings, and a good anti-theft tracking system. Having a car with high safety ratings means that if you get in an accident, you are less likely to be injured. When you get injured, insurance companies have to pay out of lot of money and they definitely don’t like doing that. Having an advanced anti-theft tracking system will help as well. It will prevent thieves from trying to steal your car and if it does get stolen, it can be tracked.

Lastly, if you are insuring multiple cars, you can always ask your insurance company for a multi car discount. It’s not abnormal that you can insure two cars for the price of one car. Make sure you ask the auto insurance company if they offer this type of discount because not all of them do. Some insurance companies do Home Insurance as well and having your cars and home under one policy will definitely help you save on your rates.

So, in conclusion, these are the ways to get a cheap auto insurance quote. Please use the links on the top or side to get a free insurance quote. It’ll take less then 3 minutes and you will have quotes from all the leading auto insurance companies.

Cheap Auto Insurance for Teenagers

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

Generally the words cheap auto insurance and teenagers do not go hand in hand, but in this article I am going to explain to you what you can do to get the cheapest available insurance for your teenager.

Teenagers love the sense of having freedom. Turning 16 and being able to get your license opens up a whole new world for them. Often times when a teenager gets behind the wheel of a car, they feel that they are invincible and causes them to take risks that an experienced driver won’t. Auto Insurance companies realize that and that’s why insuring a teenager is often times a lot more expensive then insuring a middle age adult with a good driving record.

Many auto insurance companies consider people under the age of 25 in a higher risk category for vehicle accidents. Getting in an accident as a teenager could skyrocket your premiums up by 50% to even 100%. Young people in the ages of 15-20 die from car crashes more then anything else. This makes a teenager a serious threat to someone on the road which is why teen auto insurance premiums are high, but don’t be too discouraged! I will show you what you can do to lower those premiums!

As a teenager this is how you can get a cheap auto insurance quote.

  1. Keep a good driving record. Having multiple speeding tickets and accidents will not look good at all. Many accidents are from teenagers speeding and when you get speeding tickets, the insurance company is going to consider you as a risky driver and raise your rates. DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) or DUI (Driving Under the Influence) will make your rates skyrocket as well. Its very possible, your premiums could double and you might even lose your license, so keeping a clean driving record is very important if you want to keep those premiums down.
  2. Drive a Safe Car. Having a newer car with advanced airbags will help lower your premiums as much as 50%! Insurance companies know that if you were to get in an accident, it will be a lot less likely for you to get injured then in an old car with no airbags. Having a high horsepower sports car or a SUV will increase your premiums and insurance companies see those cars being more risky for teens to drive.
  3. Getting Good Grades. Doing well in school and having a 3.0 or higher GPA will help lower your insurance rates up to 10%. Insurance companies reward teens with good academic performance. This is a good motivation for teenagers to get good grades because it helps save money
  4. Take a Defensive Driving Course. Having taken a defensive driving course shows insurance companies that you are trying to be a safe driver to avoid accidents. This will also help in getting a discount. Make sure you contact your insurance company and ask them for a list of approved defensive driving courses you can take in your area.
  5. Get involved in a Community. Last but not least, the teenager can involve themselves in a community such as Eagle Scouts or Girl Scouts. Certain insurance companies will give an additional discount for this because they see the teenager as less risky since they are spending time bettering their community.

Hopefully, this guide has helped you better understand how auto insurance companies view teenagers and what you can do to keep your teenager’s insurance rates down. Please use one of the links at the bottom to run a FREE insurance quote to compare against all the leading insurance companies.

Always remember that driving is a privilege and when abused it can be taken away. Always obey the law and practice safe driving.

You can call around to different car insurance companies and ask them to match that price, or even call your current insurer with the quote you found and tell them that you will switch companies if they don’t beat their competitor’s rate.

Having the right car also plays a big part in your insurance rate. In order to get a really low rate, you need to buy the right car, meaning, one that has good safety ratings, good security system and isn’t easily accessible to thieves.
